Australia is a long haul destination, and that is part of the charm. Isolated from the rest of the world, four seas and three major oceans wash her 34,000-kilometer coastline. Coming from Los Angeles it is approximately 14 hours direct across the blue Pacific to Melbourne or Sydney. Not a bad flight, especially if you leave late at night and arrive early the next morning. You cross the International Date Line, so you will gain a day coming over, but don’t worry, you’ll loose it going back.

From Europe it is generally around 12-14 hours down to the hubs of South East Asia, and from there around 8-10 hours down to Australia. Crossing the coast near Broome you could be forgiven for thinking that you have arrived. It is still over four hours flight across the vast Australian Outback to the eastern seaboard.

Major International Airports are located in Darwin, Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Darwin is the closest International port to Asia, as Perth is the closest to South Africa, and Cairns to Japan. The cheapest fares will land you in Sydney or Melbourne, the two major hubs, however these cities are a long way from the Outback. Darwin is closer, but the fares are not cheap.

There are many major airlines that fly to Australia, including our national airline Qantas. Together with its One World Alliance partners, Qantas offer packages that will include domestic flights. Other airlines flying into Australia are Singapore Airlines, Thai, and Emirates. From the USA cheap flights are often available through Air New Zealand, who offer a handy stopover in Auckland as well as United . American Airlines codeshares with Qantas. Prices vary considerably, so it pays to shop around.

Flight prices fluctuate seasonally. Christmas through to the end of January (Aussie summer school holidays) is very busy and prices are at a premium. October to February is the main tourist season in southern Australia, and June to August in the north. If you can’t get a good deal from an agent, try online, or ring the airline direct. You will have to work hard to get a cheap airfare to Australia - but persevere - it’s worth it. Before you purchase your ticket we strongly recommend you obtain a visa.
