The Australian Outback is a great place to drive, vast expanses, stunning vistas, little traffic. The thing you have to consider first off is whether you plan to stick to the made roads or not.
If you want to stay on the bitumen there are some wonderful highways.
The Stuart Highway stretches across the continent from Port Augusta to Darwin, and the Eyre Highway from Port Augusta across the Nullarbor to Norseman. There are plenty of other Outback highways just waiting for you to explore. These Outback highways are ideal for holidays in campervans. You can pull in to roadside stops along the way and camp for free, many have fireplaces. Almost all roadhouses will have a shower that you can purchase for a few dollars, and food can be purchased in towns along the way. The only thing you need to be aware of is the distances. The Stuart Highway is 2834 KM (1,761miles), the Eyre Highway is 1675 km (1041 miles), so careful driving techniques are required, but all Outback highways have plenty of interesting things to stop and look at along the way. One of the best ways to do this is to hire a campervan, which will give you the freedom to travel without the hassle and expense of finding accommodation every night. It is a great sense of freedom to cruise the highways of the outback in a hire campervan or rental mobile home.
If you want to get off the road then there are also plenty of options. The iconic off road camper or motorhome is the Britz 'Bush Camper', a converted Toyota Landcruiser that will take you pretty much anywhere you can go on four wheels. Once the only provider of campervans and motorhomes for off road 4X4 use, there are now many other companys both national and local that provide rental vehicles. To really get around the outback you are best to hire/rent a four wheel drive camper or four wheel drive motorhome. Click here for off road campervan and motorhomes |
