Camping Holidays in Outback Australia

Australia is perhaps the best country in the world to take a four-wheel drive (RV) camping holiday. Here at Diamantina we are the first to admit that not everyone who visits this site is looking for the ‘full tilt’ total immersion Outback expedition like those we offer. For some time is an issue; others will be looking to see the famous attractions like Uluru and Coober Pedy, or Kakadu.

In the Outback as anywhere else in the world, the most popular places are also the most touristy. Every day, hundreds of four-wheel drive tour buses depart Alice Springs heading for Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. The interesting thing is none of them will ever leave the bitumen. The other is that the majority are advertising an outback camping holiday, except the only camping allowed at Uluru is at the caravan park at Yalara which could hardly be described as an outback camping experience or adventure.

Having said that, there are many many wonderful tourism operators in Australia that offer camping holidays in the outback. For backpackers there are operators like Groovy Grape that regularly ply the Oodnadatta Track en route from Adelaide to Alice Springs. You will travel in a mini bus towing a trailer, probably sleep in a swag and invariably have a great time and meet plenty of new friends.

We know it is a minefield out there when you are looking amongst the maze of operators all claiming they are the best or cheap or cheapest. The yardstick with camping outback is you get what you pay for. Make sure you go with an accredited operator. This is MOST important. Look carefully at the operation prior to booking. Use your gut instinct, check out the website, email them or telephone them. By communicating you should be able to get a reasonable idea about what you are in for.

There are many different camping holidays you can take. For example there are a number of camel safari operators. This is a great way to see the Outback, you don’t need any previous experience, and days are spent generally strolling along beside the camel while it carries the load, and you get a really good feel for the country. Check out Phil Gee’s Australian Camel Safaris, they are a wonderful operation based in Outback South Australia. Camping with Phil and his crew is an unforgettable experience.

If the Man from Snowy River inspires you, Steve and Kath and Lyn and Clay Baird run the multi award winning Bogong Horseback Adventures out of Tawonga South in Victoria. Using traditional packsaddles they ride up onto the magical High Plains for five day camping adventures.
