If you don't want to be stuck on the bitumen and you don't own your own vehicle then the best way to self drive in the outback is to hire a four wheel drive campervan or rental motorhome. This will give you the freedom to travel on some of the classic Outback roads, like the Oodnadatta Track, the Birdsville Track and the Tanami Road to name just a few. There is so much more to see and do if you can get off the bitumen, and many of the dirt roads are in excellent conditions (when the weather is fine).

Do be careful when booking your offroad campervan or motorhome. Even though the vehicle is an all terrain vehicle it is possible that there will still be restrictions with some suppliers as to where you can go. And remember the Outback is a dangerous place, more so when you are travelling as a single vehicle. For remote areas we recommend travelling as part of a convoy. Many Diamantina guests choose to hire a vehicle and tagalong on our remote expeditions. If you are going remote you need a high clearance 4X4 like a Toyota Landcruiser or a Nissan Patrol. The smallerfour wheel drives simply don't have the clearance. Also think about long range fuel tanks. If you do go remote, ensure you read our self drive pages for tips on what to take. Going remote will mean you will have to double check what equipment the hire/rental company have provided and what you will need to hire or buy in addition.
