Information about maps of outback australia

Australia is well mapped. Geoscience Australia produce a 1:250,000 topographic series that covers the entire continent. In many areas there are 1;100,000 maps, and in more populous areas 1:50,000 and 1-25,000. That being said, the outback is so vast that many details are omitted or incorrect, for example the Circus Rockhole in the Rawlinson Range is 5km out of place on the 1;250,000. The other problem with 1:250,000 is that the scale is extremely small for bush navigation. The advances with digital mapping and gps systems now makes in-vehicle navigation a breeze, but it should never be relied on. You should always carry hard copy maps with you. Once you know where you are headed Outback, go to the sites below. We recommend a combination of Westprint, Hema and Geoscience Maps.

westprint maps Westprint produce heritage maps of most places in Outback Australia. Attached to thier maps is a wealth of information on the history of the areas, points of interest and other details that could only come from proprietor John Deckert who is passionate about the outback and its heritage. Westprint Maps are available both in paper and digital form. Westprint also offer a mail order service on thier maps, as well as books on the outback, pda and gps equipment.

hema outback maps   Hema Maps are great travelling maps, the Great Desert Tracks services splits the outback into six maps. The Hema crew have done plenty of field research. tracks they have actually driven on are marked, and they have all the desert treks covered. They do not offer the same heritage information as Westprint, but they do include information on facilities in towns and settlements.

geoscience mapping     The GEODATA TOPO 1:250,000 Series 3 is a 2 DVD Rom set that provides a seamless coverage of Australia in the following themes: Cartography, Elevation, Framework, Habitation, Hydrography, Infrastructure, Terrain, Transport, Utility and Vegetation.

landsat maps

The Landsat 7 mosaic is a digital mosaic of the whole of Australia and is available for free download from NASA.

ozi explorer

Ozi Explorer is a map reading program that when connected to a gps either through a palm device or through your lapop will place you on the map, record your track and much much more. It is a wonderful program that you can download. You can then load your digital maps into it. The program is designed and coded by Des Newman in Queensland and is popular world wide.
