Information about communication in Outback Australia

uhf radio

UHF radio is the cheapest and most universally used form of communication in the outback. Through repeaters placed on elevated locations, the line of sight transmission can be extended in many places to over 100kms. That being said, there are vast areas of the outback that are out of range of any repeaters, rendering your UHF radio virtually useless in an emergency. A UHF radio is however ideal for intervehicle communication, and to communicate with other vehicles in your vincinity, especially in sandhill country. satellite phones

Satellite comunication is improving all the time. The latest Thuraya unit pictured is almost the size of a mobile phone. The phone is in range throughout Outback Australia making it an essential item. Telstra use the Iridium network of low earth orbit satellites. Should you require broadband data there are several units available ranging in price. The cheapest of these systems are the bgan units from Immarsat.

You may find it more economical to hire a sat phone for your trip.

Satcomms are a leader in satellite communications in Australia and are happy to provide you with further information

codan hf radio HF Radio was until the advent of satellite phones the main method of communication. Codan, an Australian company based in Adelaide are world leaders of HF technology, where the radio waves bounce off the ionisphere. Depending on the time of day, different frequencies work to different degrees. Where once the Royal Flying Doctor service used to offer a public radio telephone service, that role has now been taken over by VKS-737 who provide emergency and general radio communications assistance services to travellers in the Outback.
