european exploration of the tirari desert

The first explorer into the Tirari Desert was Colonel Peter Egerton Warburton in 1866 who followed the Warburton River downstream which he mistook for the Cooper. The surveyor John W.Lewis surveyed the eastern shore of Lake Eyre in 1874, and Alfred Howitt travelled through the desert in 1859. Cecil T Madigan travelled down the eastern shore of Lake Eyre after his epic crossing of the Simpson Desert in 1939.
